weekend of productivity, III

Now where did I leave off… ah yes. Spending lots of money at the Paper Source. After that we headed to my favorite Old Town eatery for some Saturday brunch. I had the Scottish eggs, E had the fritatta, and A had the crabcake sandwich. All highly recommended. </shameless plug>

Then the ladies and I went our separate ways. My afternoon was equally productive, though not in entirely wedding-related ways, unless you count a massive grocery shopping trip wedding related. Which, tangentially, it is, since is provided sustenence for J and me. And without us, well, no wedding.

Sunday I attacked my wedding storage office with a vengance. You are thankful that I am not providing a before picture because it. was. horrendous. In addition to the fact that I have literally been arbitrarily tossing all wedding-related purchases and deliveries in to the room with neither rhyme nor reason, it was also full of “storage” from when I moved in. Yes, I know that was December. Deal. You know all those enormous tupperware containers you have of old high school papers and swim meet ribbons from 1993? Yeah, that’s what was in there.  So. I took my ham-and-cheese omlette fed self (thanks babe!) and a large garbage can and went to work.

In the end, I have several empty drawers, one empty tupperware container thingy, a wedding CORNER, and took out three large garbage cans of remnants from the 1980s. And 1990s. And early 2000s. Faretheewell, childhood.

Clean office!

The Wedding Corner

In return, I have a functional working space. And after October 23rd, when The Wedding Corner is cleared out, it might even look uncluttered a little less cluttered!

Yes, I am writing this from the couch in the den. Why do you ask?

i’m not even going to bother…

…making excuses for my blogging laziness. Yes, I know, it’s been two months since I posted. I’m sorry. ::Hangs head in shame::

To get me back in blogging mode, I’m stealing a meme off of a fun new blog I found, Ashley’s Antics. Ashley is another DC area wedding blogger getting married in October! I’m not going to tag anyone, but feel free to steal it and play along!

So, here we go.

Kate & J

1. What are your middle names? Frances & Daniel

2. How long have you been together? Started dating in September 2006

3. How long did you know each other before you started dating? A few weeks

4. Who asked whom out? He asked me out, but I made the plans!

5. How old are each of you? 27 & 32 (I’ll be 28 by the wedding)

6. Whose siblings do you see the most? Hmmm… we see all of our siblings pretty regularly, every few weeks.

7. Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple? J being unemployed sucks.

8. Did you go to the same school? Nope

9. Who is smarter? I’d like to think we’re both pretty smart, in different ways. He’s really good at building things and understanding how things work together. I’m more academic and logical.

10. Who is the most sensitive? I am definitely. He’s pretty sensitive too.

11. Where do you eat out most as a couple? We like ethnic food a lot – Indian, Middle Eastern, Thai… or BBQ. And there’s a little hole in the wall diner about 20 minutes away that we love for brunch on weekends.

12. Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Costa Rica!

13. Who has the craziest exes? Neither of us has particularly crazy exes.

14. Who has the worst temper? He does. But we can both be pretty hot-headed, especially if we’re hungry!

15. Who does the cooking? Usually it’s about 50/50, but he’s been doing most of it lately, since I have to stay off my bum ankle. (That’s a story for another post).

16. Who is the neat-freak? Him, definitely. He’s been a good influence though. I’m definitely not as messy as I used to be. But he’s still neater.

17. Who is more stubborn? We are both very stubborn. Usually about really dumb things. This is also worse when we’re hungry.

18. Who hogs the bed? He says I do, but that’s only because he comes to bed so late! Obviously I’m going to spread out if I’m sleeping there for three hours alone…

19. Who wakes up earlier? I do during the week, he usually does on weekends.

20. Where was your first date? Meriweather Post Pavillion for Jon Stewart stand-up

21. Who is more jealous? Neither of us is really jealous. Sometimes I get grumpy if I think he’s not spending enough time with me.

22. How long did it take to get serious? After 8 or 9 months we knew we had something good.

23. Who eats more? He does, a lot. The man has the metabolism of a… something with a really fast metabolism. Drives me nuts.

24. Who’s better with the computer? He’s a software developer, so it’s no contest. I can hold my own though.

25. Who drives when you are together? Neither of us particularly likes to drive, so we take turns. He drives more though, because he prefers his car and his car is automatic, which I don’t do.

…aaaaand we’re back! It’s supposed to be 95 in DC tomorrow, so I’ll stay inside with the AC and catch all you nice folks up on what’s been going on with the wedding and other news recently. I hope you haven’t forgotten me!

It’s voting time again!

My Dad’s restaurant won the last round thanks to everyone who came out and voted! Today Chadwicks is up in the FINAL FOUR! Please take a moment to head over and vote, it would mean so much to me. Thanks for all of your support. More wedding updates soon, I promise! 🙂

need a favor (nwr)

Hi all! I have a big favor to ask everyone. My Dad owns a pub/restaurant in Washington, DC, and they are in the Quarterfinals of the local “Burger Brackets” (like March Madness, get it? I know, I know)

It would be a HUGE help if you could head over and vote for them! If you’re in the area, you may have heard of it – Chadwicks, in Georgetown. Vote from work, from home, get your significant others to vote, post to your blog, anything you can do to help would be huge! We need all the votes we can get.

Please click here to go vote! Thank you thank you thank you!

for better or for worse

Vows start early ’round these parts. J was laid off on Monday. He worked for a pretty small company, and was the newest employee, and highest paid, so it was no doubt a smart business decision. Buuuuut it still sucks. This is the second time he’s gotten the hook since the recession started. Obviously not his fault, but a blow to the ego nonetheless.

The first time, last May, he didn’t really like his job anyway, and he had a good bit of cash saved up, so he didn’t take it too hard. This time though, he hasn’t built his savings back up, and he really liked what he was doing and the people he worked with. So it just sucks all around. We worked on his resume last night, and he’s been online today looking for jobs. The difference from the last time he looked is amazing. He does software development, so a pretty high demand set of skills, and last time he would get pages and pages of job openings when he did searches. Now, maybe 10 jobs will pop up. And we live in an area that has been, comparatively speaking, somewhat removed from the worst of the economic crunch.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for us that he finds something soon. I think he’s going to look for something with a bigger (i.e. more stable) company this time around. Money will be tight until he finds something, but if we watch the budget pretty closely we should be okay, for a month or so anyway. Wedding spending will have to slow down a little. Or start going on credit cards, which we wanted to avoid. Mostly it just sucks seeing someone you love so upset and literally not be able to do anything about it. I feel completely useless.

So You’re EnGAYged – A brand new LGBTQ wedding website!

Photobucket

I’m a huge fan of Kelly of the Two Brides Blog, so when she announced that she was teaming up with Lara Swanson of Lara Swanson Photography to launch an LGBTQ-focused wedding website, I was absolutely thrilled. The official launch of the site So You’re EnGAYged was yesterday, and the site looks absolutely fantastic. It features multiple same-sex wedding bloggers, LGBTQ-friendly vendor profiles, wedding tips for both the engaged couple and the vendors who serve them, and LGBT news.

The vendors DO NOT pay to be featured on the site – they are put through a verification process to ensure that they are actively LGBTQ friendly, and the site only accepts advertisements from vendors who have been vetted.  All I can say is it is high time for a website like this, and Kelly is an absolute hero for envisioning it and making it a reality. Please head over and check out all of her hard work!

freedom to marry week

Photobucket

I know, I know… I’m a few days late on this. I kept meaning to post about it, all week, but extra blogging time has been quite elusive. I did want to officially state this blog’s (ok, my) support of “Freedom to Marry Week”, being hosted for the 12th year in a row by the Freedom to Marry organization, which is a “gay and non-gay partnership to win marriage equality nationwide.”  The goal of this week is to encourage people to talk with their family, friends, and community about why they support marriage equality. Take the pledge today.

To say that I am enthusiastic about this cause would be a gross understatement. I believe that this is THE civil rights issue of our generation, and am fully confident that equality will be granted in my lifetime, hopefully sooner than later.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to post the “Fidelity: Don’t Divorce” video that’s been making the rounds on the blogosphere. If this doesn’t tug your heartstrings, I don’t know what will. I wish only the best to all of these families and the many others who declare their love and commitment regardless of what the law says.

Saw this meme done by Linda over at Silly Little Mischief, and thought it was kind of neat, so I snagged it!

belated inauguration post

This inauguration was like another Christmas for me. Actually, it was like 8 years of Christamases. Granted my memory only extends back through about two and a half presidents, but I have to say, I don’t expect to ever be this excited about a politician again.  We didn’t go downtown at all, but even just watching it on television and talking to people who were there was amazing. Weeks like this really bring home what this nation is all about. And I love it so!

This is my new happy place:
Photobucket

Now, I’m a big NPR geek, but mainly I enjoy their news programming, so I don’t listen often on the weekends, since that tends to be more entertainment and call in type shows. But I hopped in my car last night and caught the beginning of “Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor. Usually I would switch it to something else, because I find that show kind of weird, but he started off with a poem he wrote about the inauguration, and then a cheeky Obama song – and they were great! I’ve been digging around online to find them, but they don’t seem to be posted yet. I’ll update this post once they are.
